In the book god grew tired of us, there are 2 main kinds of conflict. Person vs person, and person vs self.
The conflict person vs person is in the book so much because it is set during a war and there is so much killing and fighting and torturing. The main character is John, he runs from his home village and walks thousands of miles to find a safe place to live. He gets beaten and almost killed many times, he has to run from fighting and wars numerous times always managing to get out of them alive. His family is killed in the war and he is the only one who survives the major conflict that is going on around him all the time.
Person vs self conflict also happens a lot in the book. John is always fighting with himself in his head and wondering what would be the best move to make. He has to make important decisions a lot and fast, like what direction should he run to, should he help the boy with the broken arm, how long should he hold out eating the last of his food and so on.
Another kind of conflict that is also in this book is person vs nature. John has to walk hundreds of miles to get to the safe place to live, he walks mostly through deserts and grasslands. Most of the time he doesn't have food or water and almost dies on several occasions. There is hardly any water and ends up having to drink his urine to survive. The hot desert makes it a lot harder to walk in and survive then it would have been if it was cooler.
